Punta del Este is located around 140 km east of the capital Montevideo in the department of Maldonado, at the far end of the estuary of the Río de la Plata.
The beach (Playa Brava) has golden sand and is home to the most important sight “La Mano de Punta del Este”, the gigantic hand of Punta del Este, a sculpture by the artist Mario Irarrázabals. It is Punta del Este's most famous landmark and was unveiled in 1982 as part of an international exhibition.
Since then, the hand has become an enduring symbol of Punta del Este. On the one hand, it represents both the artistic spirit of the city, but also its connection with the natural world. The placement of the hand is a reminder of the power of nature and the constant changing of the tides.
The presence of the artwork has attracted international attention and lured art lovers and collectors to the city's galleries and museums, revitalizing the local art market.
