Bolivia a country in central South America
Bolivia is a country in central South America and offers a diverse landscape ranging from the Andes to the Atacama Desert, the rainforest in the Amazon basin and of course the Salar de Uyuni, wich is the world's largest salt flat, at 10,582 square kilometres in area.
From San Pedro de Atacama, we set off on a multi-day tour through the Valle de la Luna in the nearby Los Flamencos National Reserve. Somewhere in the middle of nowhere, we cross the border into Bolivia and drive through the world's largest salt flat, the Salar de Uyuni, to Uyuni.
The Salar de Uyuni in the Andes, in the southwest of Bolivia, is the world's largest salt flat. It was once the site of a prehistoric lake, which dried up and left behind a desert-like landscape. The almost 11,000 square kilometer area is characterized by snow-white salt, rock formations and cactus-covered islands.
This lunar landscape appears inhospitable and can be observed from the island of Incahuasi in the center. Although hardly any life is possible in this unique ecosystem, numerous flamingos have settled here.
