Montevideo, a port city and the capital of Uruguay
The port city of Montevideo is a perfect destination for travelers who enjoy strolling past buildings from the colonial era as well as along beautiful beaches. We particularly like the carefree way of life, the South American temperament and the dazzling impressions.
Most of the time we move around by bus. A bus ride gives you a great picture of the city with its many lively squares, street cafés and exciting colonial-style architecture.
It is worth getting off the bus at Plaza Independencia (Independence Square). The most important buildings in the city and the entrance to the old town are located around this beautiful square. Furthermore it is also home to the Torre Antel (Antel Tower), built in 2003 and the headquarters of the telecommunications company of the same name. We take the free elevator, up to the 35th floor to the viewing platform and enjoy a great view over Montevideo.
In Ciudad Vieja (the old town), we get an impression of the original core of Montevideo. There you will also find the only remaining section of the wall that once surrounded the entire city. It now serves as the entrance to the Ciudad Vieja. There are many churches, museums and theaters here. At night, the district comes alive with nightclubs playing tango and candombe for the many dancers.
We also find street stalls selling various things, such as mate cups, to enjoy the traditional mate tea.
