When I was feeding crocodiles
When I was feeding crocodiles while the world was working.
It was a few years ago. 184 kilometers southwest of Katherine, Northern Territory in Australia. 40 degrees in the shade. Only there is no shade here – just tin sheds, inside very high humidity and countless baby crocodiles. Outside, dust and a few ponds and some enclosures. Inside them, the larger animals.
While my former colleagues in Switzerland are sitting in their offices, I’m standing in the tin sheds of a crocodile farm. WWOOF work. Voluntary. Unpaid. And yet: one of the most valuable experiences of my travels around the world.
Why am I telling you this?
Because real freedom doesn’t mean everything is comfortable. Freedom means deciding for yourself where you spend your time – and with whom (or what 🐊).
It was during my second long-term trip, all in all my fourth stay on the red continent, and this time I didn’t just want to see Australia. I wanted to live it. Get to know the land, people, reptiles. Gather experiences that no 5-star hotel could ever offer me.
What I learned from it:
- The best travel experiences happen outside the comfort zone
- People don’t remember hotels – they remember moments
- Freedom sometimes feels like sweat and adventure
Today I can look back on that time – with photos, stories and memories that nobody else has.
That’s exactly why we’re developing yapuso.com: So that you can plan, experience and preserve your unique travel experiences forever.
